Missions

When we think about missions at Sherwood we believe that our involvement goes beyond giving to the Cooperative Program. While we do financially support the Cooperative Program we also believe we must see where God is working and invest in those ministries or persons to help us "reach the world from Albany, Georgia." Our laity give of their time and resources to see that ministries are ongoing, effective and relevant to certain needs in our community, while supporting fulltime missionaries on the field and sending Sherwood members as short term missionaries to meet the needs in any place that God directs. Our areas of Missions can be broken down using the command found in Acts 1:8 - Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria, and the uttermost parts of the earth.

Our Jerusalem:

  • Alpha Ministries, David Smith (Director)
  • Drey Line Ministry - ministering to homeless men of Albany by providing them a hot breakfast, work clothing and job leads.
  • The Anchorage - provides treatment for men struggling with alcoholism.
  • The Alpha Crisis Pregnancy Center - ministering to women who are facing a crisis pregnancy and may be considering abortion. We offer them alternatives to abortion and share the Gospel through compassionate counseling.
  • ReFresh Conference - ReFresh is a conference for those who thirst for revival. It's not about church growth or the latest worship fads. It's a time to come apart from the distractions and chaos of life and seek the face of God.
  • Sherwood Sports Complex - Sherwood Recreation is designed to reach people for Christ, connect families to Christ, and use sports and recreation as tools to do so. From the fields to the courts
to the classes we want to strenghten the heart, mind,
soul, and body to glorify Christ.
  • Sherwood Christian Academy - The mission of Sherwood Christian Academy is to assist Christian parents in obeying the Biblical instruction to bring up their children in the training and nurturing of the Lord. SCA provides an excellent academic education integrated with a Christian view of God and the world based on the inspired, inerrant, and authoritative Word of God.
  • The Lord's Pantry - The mission of the Lord's Pantry is to provide free groceries, clothing and spiritual encouragement to the impoverished in Dougherty county and surrounding counties.
  • Albany Outreach Center - This center exists to financially assist families or individuals in our community who are on the verge of loosing their home due to the inability to pay rent. They also assist families who have a familiy member with the early stages of Alzheimers by providing both daycare and in home care.
  • The Havner House - Named in honor of one of America’s greatest preachers, the Havner House serves as a temporary stateside home to Missionaries on furlough. Request for use can be made through the Sherwood Missions office. Many missionary families have made the Havner House their home while on furlough in the Unites States. Missionaries interested in furloughing at the Havner House click here to submit an application.

Our Judea:

Our Samaria:

  • EQUIP Ministries - Equipping international Christian leaders to effectively serve the growing Body of Christ around the world.
  • LifeStyle Ministries - Before his death June 29, 2001, at the age of 64, due to Pulmonary Fibrosis, Ronald Dunn had an extensive itinerate ministry of Bible teaching and preaching and served as the Minister-at-Large for the MacArthur Blvd. Baptist Church in Irving.  He was also the president of LifeStyle Ministries, an organization that produces Bible study cassettes, which he founded in 1970.  He preached Bible Conferences all over the United States, Europe, Australia, Canada, Central America, South Africa and the Caribbean Islands.

Our Uttermost Parts of the Earth:

  • Eric & Ramona Reese - Sherwood members since 1989 Eric and Ramona Reese, full time IMB missionaries receive, support and support services from Sherwood Mission while serving in Brazil. For a video of Eric & Ramona's ministry, click here.

  • Aaron & Joanna Choate - Missionaries to the Solomon Islands
  • Hockey Ministires International - Since 1977, Hockey Ministries International has been active in every area of hockey including youth, college and junior, European, Minor Pro, and the NHL. Through camps, chapels, clinics, and conferences they serve the spiritual needs of players, coaches, families and fans.
  • Student Leadership University - The vision of SLU is one that is optimistically looking forward towards the goal of empowering, enabling, and equipping students around the globe to rise to the call of leadership along with training students to be able to adequately respond to the challenges presented by an increasingly pluralistic and postmodern culture.
  • Fellowship of Christian Athletes - The Fellowship of Christian Athletes is touching millions of lives... one heart at a time. Since 1954, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes has been challenging coaches and athletes on the professional, college, high school, junior high and youth levels to use the powerful medium of athletics to impact the world for Jesus Christ. FCA is the largest Christian sports organization in America. FCA focuses on serving local communities by equipping, empowering and encouraging people to make a difference for Christ. A Word From Our Pastor On Missions:

Why Missions?

It’s the Great Commission. It’s how we reach the world from Albany, Georgia. Through what we are doing in local, state, national and oversea’s missions, the impact of Sherwood is being felt around the world. Whether it is by training pastors overseas through Equip or our recent trips to Costa Rica and Cuba, we are seeing God touch lives we could not touch otherwise.

When you think about missions, you think about getting of our self centeredness and becoming other’s centered. The reason we are on TV across the country is to hopefully impact people’s lives with the gospel. There is so much bad theology and false teaching in this post-modern world. The truth needs to be shared. That’s why we are on FAITH TV in nearly 100 markets nationally.

When you think about missions, you think about going to places you wouldn’t normally go. We’ve been to New Hampshire, we’ve worked inner city projects locally and on student mission trips. We’ve helped people rebuild their lives after the floods of the 90’s. We’ve gone to communities overseas where there was no church. We’ve been to Africa, Russia, the Caribbean, Mexico and more. We’ve been on TV and radio in the Philippines, Europe and North Africa.

Yes, you can change the world from Albany. Yes, YOU can change the world. Consider being a part of what God is doing through missions at Sherwood. Contact John Spencer and find out how you can get involved and ‘reach the world from Albany, Georgia.’
